From Critical Illness to Independence: Nickolis’ Journey of Recovery at Sage Specialty Hospital. Nick admitted to LTAC for fungal pneumonia, malnutrition, bacteremia, dysphagia, critical illness myopathy and GERD, requiring IV antifungals, IV antibiotics, PEG tube feedings and rehab.  After battling an extensive stay at URHCS from acute infection and illness requiring high flow oxygen, IV nutrition, IV antibiotics and ultimately a peg tube placement, Nick came to Sage LTAC for continued critical care and rehabilitation. He had a significant decline in strength, balance and activity tolerance, which resulted in limited functional mobility, as well as nausea and trouble tolerating an oral diet. Nick has been at Sage receiving IV antibiotics, speech therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy, and can now tolerate an oral diet and is enjoying his meals again.

He is now able to get out of bed and use his wheelchair independently, as well as walk 400 feet during therapy. Nick will continue his therapy and healing journey at Encompass Rehab, where he will receive more aggressive rehab to prepare him to go home. It has been an honor for our team here at Sage Specialty Hospital to care for Nick during his fight against severe infection and debilitation. We know he is a fighter and will make a full recovery to return home safely with his wife, Amy.
